Valerie Surjan works in conjunction with Michael Nourot and the Nourot Glass studio. Michael blows pieces for her which she then takes and etches designs onto . She also has a limited series of perfume vials which she creates at the studio. Valerie starts her process by masking the entire piece with pressure resistant tape. She then draws her design often working with themes of flowers, fruits, fauna, and recently a series of African Wildlife directly on the tape. Valerie begins cutting away the tape revealing areas to have the deepest engraving first and continues until the slightest frosting of the glass is needed. She engraves her pieces using a high pressured etching with fine grain sand. Occasionally she uses an auxiliary process such as gold leafing or enameling to accent a design.
