Donald Carlson is a renowned glass artist known for his unparallel red glass. Donald has been working in glass since 1968. He works in his own studio in Northern California assisted by his wife, Karen. Donald received a bachelor's degree from California State University, San Jose; and a bachelor's and two master's degrees from California State University, San Francisco. Donald's work has seen much recognition with his work shown in more than 200 exhibitions world wide. He also has work in numerous public and private collections including those of The Philadelphia Art Museum; The Chrysler Art Museum; Arizona State University; The Art Commission of San Francisco; The Museum of Glass; The Smithsonian Museum, Washington, D.C.; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Donald Carlson is a master of red glass, the hardest color to achieve in glass due to it's complex chemistry. Donald bases his formula on selenium and cadmium which creates a spectacularly clear, and vibrant color. Donald further achieves impermeable depth in his work by blowing each piece in three layers the middle an opaque white between the beautiful transparent red. Donald chooses simple elegant forms to display his red. Sometimes adding random patterns of gold or silver leaf to the surface. He also has developed beautiful oranges, yellows, blues, and greens for his footed bowls and vases.
