Joel and Candace Bless are a husband and wife team who are known for their brilliant handblown and cast glass designs which capture and radiate light. Hence, they named their studio, Glasslight Studio when it was established in 1982. Joel first began studying glassblowing while attending Rochester Institute of Technology where Candace also attended studying graphic design. Joel continued to study glassblowing at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. In 1990, one of their lamps was chosen by the Smithsonian????s Renwick Gallery to be included in their traveling show, ????Art That Works: Decorative arts of the 80s????. Joel and Candace Bless collaborate on a luminous series of handblown and cast glass candlesticks, bowls, and lamps. They combine modern and ancient techniques to achieve unique effects and possibilities in glass. In their series, Cast Glass Candlesticks, Joel and Candace pour molten clear crystal, sometimes accented with color, into a handcrafted graphite form. This demanding process requires physical agility and strength along with quick decision making while tolerating intense heat from the molten glass. This technique allows for random patterns to form during the cooling process.
